Professional Standards for Teachers in Adult Education

Maryland's Framework

MSDE logoAt the Professional development Symposium, AELS began charting a new course for its adult education professional development system. A diverse representation of the field met to examine research and professional development models and to make recommendations on needed enhancements. Participants overwhelmingly voiced support and interest in the adoption of teacher standards as one of the first steps in improving instruction and strengthening the professional development system. The standards were viewed as an opportunity to clarify the skills and knowledge that lead to learner achievement and quality instruction in the adult education classroom. Standards will also foster a closer alignment between teacher's needs and professional development activities.
