The Literacy Council of Montgomery County, MD seeks a full-time Instructional Specialist to help implement standards-based English as a Second Language (ESL) program .

Working in a team of program specialists, this person will implement class curriculum based on Maryland content standards; mentor and coach teachers and volunteer assistants; identify professional-development needs of teachers and help coordinate activities to address those needs; assist with the development and execution of the program’s data quality plan; review unit and lesson plans; maintain teacher resource library; coordinating instructional supplies; and perform other duties as assigned based on program demographics, enrollment trends, and the needs of the target client populations.

This is a grant-funded position. The Instructional Specialist will be expected to attend grant-mandated trainings and communicating pertinent information to the appropriate local program staff; attend grant-mandated “train-the-trainer” initiatives and subsequently train local staff; and attend professional-development activities.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred); teaching experience required; adult-education teaching experience required; training and mentoring experience required. Fluency with MS-Office applications (MS-Excel, MS-Word, MS-PowerPoint) required. Must be willing to attend grant-mandated trainings and meetings.

Position Details: Full time. Salary range: $52K - $62K with benefits, depending on experience. Position located in Rockville, Maryland.

LATINO SERVICES COORDINATOR

This full-time position will function as a member of the Adult Literacy & ESOL Program team. Primary responsibility will be to develop and assist with English and vocational instruction for Hispanic clients. Development of relationships with other Hispanic providers, research in best practices for workplace ESOL, and participation with case management will also be key roles. Outreach and recruitment, as well as documentation and data tracking, are to be included.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or vocational education; must be bilingual in Spanish and English. Knowledge and sensitivity relating to adult education and HIV/AIDS preferable, and experience with program development, marketing, community development, and/or training are desired. The position requires some local travel, so reliable transportation is a must, and a flexible schedule will accommodate the need to work evenings and Saturdays.

South Baltimore Learning Center

Position Description

Title:               Part Time GED Instructor

Reports to:      Director of Education  

Purpose:   This individual will provide instruction to SBLC adult learners with skills levels ranging from the 8 th to 12 th grade levels.  Instruction will cover all subject areas and is intended to prepare the adult learner to pass the General Education Development exam, and also to increase their functional literacy skill levels.  Instructors are expected to maintain learner retention and achieve learner gains.

Primary Duties:

 Instruction (70%)

6 hours of in-class instruction per week, in all main content areas (writing, reading comprehension, mathematics).

Planning, Administration & Case Management (20%)      

2 hours of lesson planning/recordkeeping per week & case management, per class, to include attendance and calls to those absent & weekly update meetings with the academic counselor.

Assessment  (6%)

Pre and post testing using prescribed evaluation instruments for each new student or each returning learner who lacks a prior post test.

Grade tests, share results with learners, and report data to IS.

Training (3%)

Attendance in at least 12 hours per year (or 3 hours per cycle) of instructor staff development as requested, and at monthly instructors' meetings to review program developments and requirements.

Other (1%)

Miscellaneous program support related to learner, instruction or organization activities.  

Skills & Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.  Teaching experience required, experience with adults strongly preferred.  Experience with underprivileged populations extremely helpful.  Ability to integrate technology into class instruction needed.  Able to work routinely in the time slot agreed upon, whether day, evening or Saturday classes.  Team player with good communication and organizational skills.

The position of ADULT EDUCATION INTAKE/ASSESSMENT SPECIALIST is available at Carroll Community College. Position is on a full-time, 12-month basis, working under the supervision of the Director of Adult Education. This is a grant-funded position.

FUNCTION: Responsible for conducting orientation, and assessment sessions of all Adult Education Program students. Specific responsibilities include: administering assessments, including pre-tests; coordinating procedures for assessment and placement of learners in appropriate level classes; referring learners to support services and /or outside agencies; communicating with learners and instructors regarding placement, progress, and attendance; ordering inventories, and maintaining security of test materials; working with the Instructional Specialist to address the special needs of all enrolled learners; managing waiting lists; indentifying professional development needs related to assessment and intake and coordinating activities to address those needs; assisting with the development and execution of the program’s Data Quality Plan; attending State Intake/Assessment Specialist meetings and professional development activities and communicating/implementing pertinent information/training to appropriate local program staff.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in an education setting teaching, counseling or advising special adult populations.

SALARY: Grade 10 on the 12-month Salary Scale. Minimum starting salary: $39,953. Includes excellent fringe benefit package. Position is on an annually renewable, grant-funded basis.

Ready for Something Totally Different?

 

The Montgomery College Adult ESOL & Literacy – GED Program seeks an experienced and highly skilled ESOL teacher for a pilot vocational adult ESOL class in an emerging ESOL for the Building Trades program.  This teacher will work closely with a curriculum developer and content area instructors to implement this class, so while experience in construction or building trades (e.g. carpentry, electrical, HVAC) is a huge plus, a willingness to learn and the ability to work well on a team is even more important.   

We are looking for a teacher with extensive experience in TESOL, particularly in workplace training and/or sheltered English/content-area instruction. UT Center for Literacy Studies

The Center for Literacy Studies, located within the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, is seeking an onsite Director to begin Spring, 2008. The mission of the Center for Literacy Studies is to support and advance literacy education across the lifespan. The Center conducts research, professional development, program evaluation and other work within family, community, and workplace literacy contexts.

The Director oversees the work of the Center, raises funds through grants and contracts, writes grant proposals and develops budgets, approves expenditures of funds, and negotiates subcontracts. The Director also hires and discharges personnel, acts as principal investigator for grants, provides direct project oversight for some grants, and oversees a staff of thirty to assure project work is conducted in accordance with contractual agreements with outside funders.
